TNT Express halves aircraft de-icing time at Liège hub

TNT Express has put four new de-icing trucks
into service at its air hub in Liège, bringing its fleet to ten. The
four new Vestergaard Elephant Beta vehicles allow TNT Express to de-ice
its airplanes nearly fifty percent faster than last winter. TNT Express
is now able to de-ice a Boeing 747 aircraft in only two minutes, using
six trucks simultaneously. Most de-icing operations are performed on TNT
Express' dedicated "de-icing zone", where three aircraft can be treated
simultaneously. De-icing crews undergo several days of on-the-job and
simulator training.
TNT Airways obtains ETOPS 180 certification
TNT Airways obtained the ETOPS 180 certification for the Boeing 777 aircraft. After becoming ETOPS 90 on 1 September and ETOPS 120 in November, this was the ultimate target the company wanted to reach for this aircraft type. With ETOPS 180, TNT Airways is now allowed to fly over oceans or deserted stretches of land, 180 minutes away from any diversion airport. Even if one engine fails, the company can continue for 3 hours to the nearest diversion airport. This will enable the airline to fly more direct routes, save on fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. TNT Airways is the very first company in Belgium to obtain this qualification.

TNT brings Canadian lobster to European tables
A TNT Airways Boeing 747 freighter
transported 75 tons of Atlantic Canadian lobster from Halifax to
Brussels on Wednesday 21 December. The holiday treat was then
distributed throughout the Netherlands, Germany and France, just in time
for last-minute Christmas shopping. TNT Express operates a scheduled
service at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport every Saturday.
Wednesday’s extra flight was especially arranged to pick up fresh
lobster trucked in from Nova Scotia. Lobster from Atlantic Canada
accounts for 55 per cent of the worldwide market, according to a report
prepared last year for the Lobster Council of Canada. Canadian exporters
hope that Europe’s appetite for lobster, a traditional holiday treat,
will withstand economic worries.
