History

TNT's roots are in Australia

In 1946, Ken Thomas started his own company - Thomas Nationwide Transport - with a fleet consisting of a single truck. In under half a century, his company grew into a global enterprise, even operating its own fleet of aircraft. Much of the growth came from take-overs and interests acquired in other companies.

Here are the main steps:

1961

  • In 1961, TNT was listed on the Sydney stock exchange.

1967

  • In 1967, after 20 years of growth, Ken Thomas joins a major competitor and creates a new company: Thomas Nationwide Transport.

1973

  • TNT conquers Europe in 1973 and starts express freight services between London and Paris.

1979

  • In 1979, TNT starts air transport activities and becomes the first express carrier in Europe providing direct delivery services by air.

  • TNT Limited is acquired by KPN (Koninklijke PTT Nederland) in 1996: the company becomes then TNT Post Group (TPG).

1998

  • TPG breaks away from KPN, its telecom branch in 1998 and creates two brands: TNT and PTT Post (today TNT Post).  TNT also opens the same year its European Air Hub in Liege, Belgium.

2000

  • TNT Airways, the airline of the group, is created in 2000.

2002

  • In 2002, TPG signs a 5 year partnership with the World Food Program of the United Nations aiming at the single common goal of helping in the global fight against hunger.

2005

  • TNT announces in 2005 the extension of its Middle East Road Network and launches its first integrated road network in Asia. In January 2005, TPG operates globally under the brand TNT for all its activities.

2006

  • In 2006, TNT acquires: TG+ in Spain, Speedage in India, Mercurio in Brazil and Hoau in China.

2009

  • Three years later, TNT continues its expansion with the acquisition of LIT Cargo in Chili and Expresso Araçatuba in Brazil and extends its integrated road network worldwide.

2010

  • TNT expends its long haul network with a five day per week air cargo service linking Moscow and its main European hub Liege as well as with a direct flight between Chongqing and Liège. The same year, the company introduces three Boeings 777 in his fleet (delivery in 2011).
